How to Become a Fishing Guide in Maryland

Maryland requires a license for fishing guides. There are three types of licenses: freshwater, freshwater including designated tidal waters, and limited fishing guide.

Requirements

  • Submit an application and pay the fee
  • Certification of Insurance, to comply with the state’s workmen’s compensation act
  • A Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate and American Red Cross first aid certification
  • License valid until December 31

Fees

  • Freshwater fishing guide (resident): $20
  • Freshwater fishing guide, including designated tidal waters (resident): $50
  • Freshwater fishing guide (nonresident): $50
  • Freshwater fishing guide, including designated tidal waters (nonresident): $100
  • Limited fishing guide (resident): $50
  • Limited fishing guide (nonresident): $100

The application can be submitted by mail or in person to any DNR licensing and registration service center. There are seven service centers, listed on the application form.
